Investigating how leaders shape cultural voice and vision
Cultural Futures Dialogues is Cultural Futures Lab’s signature research initiative exploring how foundation leaders, philanthropists and civic thinkers whose work intersects with contemporary art, technology, social stewardship and cultural heritage envision the role of culture in shaping our collective futures.
Through intimate, invitation-only conversations and a travelling salon series across global cities, Cultural Futures Lab is creating space for honest enquiry into the kinds of topics that don’t get asked in conventional policy forums; questions about power, equity, tradition, innovation and whose voices shape the cultural landscapes we inhabit.
The Investigation
What we're exploring
Cultural decisions made today shape which cultural futures become possible and which remain inaccessible. Yet these decision-making processes often happen behind closed doors, without transparency about whose perspectives are valued and whose are excluded.
Cultural Futures Dialogues investigates how leaders think about cultural voice and vision at a moment when technology is reshaping creative practice, when climate change threatens heritage sites, when social movements demand more equitable cultural representation and when traditional values are encountering rapid innovation.
Core questions guiding Cultural Futures Lab:
How do foundation leaders balance respect for cultural heritage with support for contemporary innovation?
What role should technology play in preserving and transmitting cultural practices across generations?
How can philanthropic investment in culture advance equity rather than reinforce existing power hierarchies?
Whose voices shape decisions about cultural priorities, whose are systematically excluded, and why?
How do traditional cultural values inform approaches to social stewardship and civic responsibility?
What does “cultural innovation” mean in contexts where centuries-old practices remain vibrant and relevant?
How can cross-cultural dialogue avoid extractive dynamics and instead foster genuine mutual learning?
These questions don’t have simple answers. With Cultural Futures Dialogues we hope to create a reflective space where leaders can grapple with complexity, acknowledge tensions and explore possibilities without pressure to arrive at predetermined conclusions.
Who Participates?
This project is a curation of global foundations, with a current focus on Japanese insights.

Civic thinkers whose work bridges cultural practice with policy, urban development, or social stewardship
Cultural strategists advising institutions on navigating change whilst honouring tradition
Heritage stewards balancing preservation responsibilities with contemporary relevance
Innovation practitioners whose work demonstrates how technology can serve cultural continuity
Dialogue Format
Intimate interviews and reflective salons
Cultural Futures Dialogues unfolds through two complementary formats designed to foster depth, honesty and cross-cultural exchange.
Phase One: Intimate interviews in Japan
We conduct confidential, one-to-one conversations with Japanese foundation leaders, philanthropists and civic thinkers in settings that encourage reflection and candour. These interviews explore participants’ thinking about cultural voice, vision and the tensions they navigate in their work.
These intimate conversations reveal nuances that disappear in public forums.
Phase Two: Travelling salon series
Building on insights from the interviews, Cultural Futures Lab convenes travelling salons in global cities including New York, Berlin and Singapore. These gatherings will bring together voices from diverse contexts to explore the themes emerging from the initial dialogues.
The salon series creates opportunities for cross-cultural learning, testing whether patterns observed in Japan resonate in other contexts or whether cultural specificity demands different frameworks.
Emerging Themes
Status: We're still learning
Cultural Futures Dialogues is an ongoing investigation. As conversations unfold, certain themes and tensions will begin to emerge. These themes will be explored more fully in forthcoming publications as the dialogue series progresses.
Outputs & Impact
A non-commercial report and ongoing knowledge exchange
Cultural Futures Lab will produce a comprehensive non-commercial report synthesizing insights from interviews and global salon conversations. This publication will be freely available to cultural organisations, foundations, policymakers and researchers worldwide.
Beyond the report, Cultural Futures Lab aims to build an ongoing community of practice – connecting individuals and institutions across borders who share a commitment to equitable cultural innovation. Salon participants will be invited to continue conversations through digital platforms, collaborative research projects and future convenings.

Why Invitation-Only?
Creating space for honest enquiry
Cultural Futures Dialogues operates through invitation to create conditions where participants can acknowledge uncertainties and explore ideas without the performative pressures that public forums impose.
Foundation leaders and philanthropists rarely have spaces where they can candidly discuss potential tensions in their work. Public settings often demand polished statements. Invitation-only dialogues enable the kind of reflective, exploratory conversation that produces meaningful insights.
This approach also allows careful attention to representation, ensuring diverse perspectives shape investigations rather than defaulting to voices that already dominate cultural policy conversations.
